Guyanese-British actress Letitia Wright, widely known for her role in the Black Panther movie franchise, arrived in her homeland Guyana on Friday January 27 after leaving at the tender age of eight.
The actress known for her role in the Marvel Cinematic Films Black Panther and its sequel was greeted with much fanfare and excitement at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Guyana after an invitation was extended by President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana H.E Dr. Mohamad Irfaan Ali in November, 2022 congratulating her on her successful career and more so, her acclaimed role in the Black Panther movie and its sequel.
During the simple welcome ceremony, an emotional Wright who was accompanied by her father, grandmother and sister reflected on the day she left her homeland to start a life in England.
“As I was landing, I could remember this funny memory of the day that me and my mom were about to leave for England and I left Good-en-tent, I said by to my friends and I came to the airport with my family and we were hugging everyone and saying goodbye, we checked our bags in they were inside pulling us saying the plane was leaving but we were so sad to leave our family that the time had past and we said okay it’s time to go to the plane and then they said your plane has left”
Wright went on to express she felt her calling for the film industry at the age of eight as she remembered acting and singing in her yard as a child for her family members.
On hand to receive the star was Guyana’s Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond .
The Minister had expressed how proud the country was to celebrate their daughter of the soil.
“We are so proud of you, people ask how can we be proud of someone we don’t know but every single child of this soil is one of our and we just wanted to show how proud we are of you”.
The actress will be in Guyana for a few weeks where she will meet with President Dr. Irfaan Ali and others during her time in Guyana.
Letitia Michelle Wright, was born on October 31, 1993. In 2018, she attained global recognition for her portrayal of Shuri in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Black Panther, for which she won an NAACP Image Award and a SAG Award. She reprised the role in Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022).
